A graduate thesis national design award winner, W. Brian Wright began his
work with Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, the founders of the New
Urbanism movement. Brian worked as a Town Planner and Project Manager at
Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company (DPZ), the top New Urbanist firm in the
world.
While at DPZ, Brian participated in approximately twenty New Urbanist
charrettes around the world ranging from regional master plans to small
greenfield projects.
While at DPZ Brian founded the Next Generation of New Urbanists, an international
organization of young New Urbanists with several hundred members. He
also aided in the formation of several chapters of Students for New Urbanism at
universities around the country. After becoming an expert in New Urbanist theory
and design, Brian was offered the opportunity to broaden his experience by
working in the development world with a DPZ client. After his time at DPZ,
Brian became the Director of Town Planning and Urban Design for Southern
Land Company, a large development company focusing on New Urbanist,
mixed-use developments.
While heading up the Town Planning and Urban Design Studio, Brian directed
the team in the planning and coding of five new projects in the first year and
also lead several charrettes. Through his work at the development company,
Brian learned how to marry the concepts of New Urbanist theory and design
with the practical realities of development, and gained an understanding of what
causes so many New Urban plans to fall short. This realization prompted Brian
to take action and start his own firm. Brian founded Town Planning & Urban
Design Collaborative L.L.C. (TPUDC), a planning firm specializing in not only
design charrettes but also in the implementation of New Urbanist projects. Since
its founding, TPUDC has been involved in a wide range of great projects from
designing and coding city-wide master plans to rebuilding the hurricanedevastated
Gulf Coast of Mississippi into a 10 acre high-density, mixed-use
infill project. In addition to this planning work, TPUDC serves as Director of
Design and provides architectural review services for several projects, aiding in
their implementation and assuring that the built reality lives up to the great master
plan. Brian took special interest in the uniqueness and potential of Simpler
Times Village and recently stepped up to be our town planner to see the project
through to completion.
